The first Tag the World Triathlon was held here on Sunday, August 23. Many competed! The sports celebrities that competed Sunday and have also competed in their own venues here regularly included Laird Hamilton and Gabby Reese! Many other fun film and TV celebrities competed too!

Kailua runner, esteemed mathematician and all-around great guy JB Nation co-organized several runners to do a semi-perimeter on August 8-9. We were able to get JB to write a summary of their experiences for our blog. Read on! For over thirty years, there was a Middle Ages team in the Oahu Perimeter Relay. For those who don't remember, this was a 134 mile relay around the island, with 35 legs for a 7-person team. The race was cancelled a few years ago for safety reasons, probably justifiably. But this left a void in some of our lives, with our favorite race of the year gone. These things can be fixed. On August 8-9, 2009, six members of the last few Middle Ages teams, with a couple of young ringers, organized our own SemiPerimeter Relay. We met at Kapiolani Park around 8 p.m. on Saturday night, blessed with a cool breeze and a nearly full moon. Following the old perimeter route, we ran the 70.5 miles to Haleiwa Beach Park in 18 legs, three each with some legs run by a couple of runners. This was always the best part of the Perimeter Relay, running the Windward Coast at night, and this route avoids the more congested areas from Kapolei to town. We finished just after 7 a.m., in 11 hours and 3 minutes. Then we drove back to the Koa House in Kaneohe for pancakes. This is how it works. You ride along with your buddies in one of the two vans, from one exchange to the next. Once there, you talk story, drink coffee, snack or doze unless you are up next. If it's your turn,then you have to put on a sweaty reflective orange vest and flashers. When the runner comes in, you take the baton and run like crazy for somewhere between 2 and 6 miles, depending on the leg. There are few cars, and good ocean breezes. When you reach the exchange, hand off the baton and remove the now even sweatier reflective orange vest and flashers.Then talk story, drink coffee, snack or doze again. Repeat twice more. This years runners were Claude Levesque, Glenn Rediger, Web Ross (the elder), Heiner Dovermann, Harry "the Horse" Siegmund and J.B. Kids back in school? Did you take a summer break from running while on travel and are ready to jump back in?
We're starting our next Running for Women series on September 8, with morning and evening choices for all levels of runners.
The Running for Women courses have introduced hundreds of women to others of like ability and helped to establish lasting running and social relationships.
Importantly, many have met their fitness and running goals through the variety of programs offered.
We are hosting a free information session on Thursday, September 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the store if you have any questions about this program. It is a great way to meet the coaches involved and meet other prospective runners.
Returning runners - you may join us (we like it if you do) at the info session and/or contact us at the store to learn more about the new offerings and the next competitive running offering.

Aloha, we'll run something akin to the Windward 1/2 marathon on Sunday, in terms of distance, albeit on a slightly different route. It will still be flat-ish and comparable to the run race route without making it boring for those running it again on 9/13. And we strongly encourage people to sign up for the Windward 1/2 run on 9/13 because it is: a) a community fun run!; b) importantly, supporting our local Boys and Girls Club clubhouse! and c) good for your fitness and running soul.
We'll leave at 6:00 a.m. from the store and head into Lanikai, do the loop and then head over to Keolu Loop (which we will do on race day), then through the high school, over the marsh and back via Kainalu.
What we do differently is that we add Lanikai Loop and skip the Kaimalino Loop that the race does.

For those wanting less miles and/or more hills, the Team Jet runners will be doing miles and hills in the beautiful Ho'omaluhia Gardens area beginning at 7:00 a.m. They'll do 5, 7 or 10 miles. Team Jet marathon training is available now and ongoing. Watch our newsletter for latest links to them!
Bring water and nutrition! We'll point to water sources and any water stashes made. This is a good run to test your nutrition choices on for the Windward 1/2 or even for the Honolulu marathon!

The Marathon Readiness series started off with a bang and a large crowd. Over 800 marathon "ready-ers" participated in the 15K run. First time marathoner but long standing race winner Todd Iacovelli was the first male finisher and seasoned runner and triathlete Rachel Ross was the overall female winner. Special congrats to all the Windward runners and town friends who did so very well. Here are just some of the results!

This is not officially a Mountain Man photo; however, the cast of characters could be found at Mountain Man Sunday! It was a great day for the mountain triathlon and many Windward participants did really really well. Read on for results from several store and area friends!! If we missed you, please send us a note!

We will be running a possible 12 miles from the store this Sunday. And if you are readying for the marathon and just getting started (with Team Jet, for example), we can offer you a 6 or a 9 mile alternative!
We'll leave the store very close to 6:00 a.m. and head out over the marsh and Saddle road into Kaneohe. 12 milers will do a new loop through a neighborhood and return by way of KBay Drive and Kalaheo. 9 milers will do same but skip some of the Kaneohe route. 6 milers will just say "see you later" and do an out and back off of the Saddle road.
We'll stash water (Susan is well enough to run this weekend and will not be water girl!) and we will also recommend that those doing 9 or 12 have their nutrition on hand. We will open the store for keys storing and be able to get nutrition to those that need it.

The Leukemia Society hosted another great Mango Days 5K on Sunday. Kailua friend Todd Iacovelli tore it up again, winning at 16:19. Great results from the up and coming Gary Fanelli Jr!
